Parliament beckons, but Rmili stays put as Casablanca mayor

Casablanca mayor, Nabila Rmili

RNI mayor’s election with more than 103,000 votes had set resignation talk swirling, but incompatibility rules bar an MP from heading a regional council—not a commune.

Contrary to information circulating on social media, Nabila Rmili will not step down as president of the Casablanca City Council following her election to the House of Representatives.

The Casablanca mayor was elected as an MP on Wednesday, September 23, on the regional list of the National Rally of Independents (RNI) in the Casablanca-Settat constituency, receiving 103,132 votes.

Her election to Parliament does not require her to give up her position at the head of the country’s economic capital. “There is no incompatibility between serving as an MP and presiding over a city council,” a person close to Nabila Rmili told Le360.

This situation stems from amendments made in 2026 to the Organic Law governing the House of Representatives. The new provisions revised the incompatibility rules that had been in force since the 2021 reform.

The new wording of Article 13 prohibits MPs from simultaneously serving as president of a regional council but does not prohibit them from combining a parliamentary mandate with the presidency of a city council.
