Motorists travelling through Rabat’s busy hospital district can once again use one of its main access roads after a section closed for several weeks was reopened following roadworks.
The road runs alongside the Ibn Sina University Hospital campus and serves an area that sees heavy daily traffic between several parts of the Moroccan capital. Its reopening is expected to ease congestion around the hospital complex after construction work required the stretch to be closed in both directions.
The disruption was linked to the construction of a pedestrian underpass between Ibn Sina University Hospital and Rabat’s Faculty of Medicine and Pharmacy. Work on the tunnel is now nearing completion.
The approximately 50-meter passage will replace the pedestrian footbridge that previously crossed Avenue Abderrahim Bouabid, one of Rabat’s major thoroughfares connecting areas including Agdal and Hay Riad.
Safer crossing between hospital and medical school
Once opened, the underpass is expected to provide a safer and more direct connection between the hospital campus and the Faculty of Medicine and Pharmacy.
Doctors, medical students, university staff, healthcare workers, patients and visitors currently move regularly between facilities on either side of the avenue. The new passage will allow pedestrians to make that journey without crossing the heavily used road.
The location is particularly important because the medical faculty sits close to several facilities belonging to Ibn Sina University Hospital, including Rabat Children’s Hospital, the Specialties Hospital and Souissi Maternity Hospital.
The project is also part of a broader redevelopment of the area surrounding the new Ibn Sina University Hospital complex.
Roads, access points and green spaces around the site are being reorganized to prepare the district for the additional traffic and pedestrian flows expected once the new hospital becomes operational.
Hospital district undergoing wider transformation
The works come as this part of Rabat develops into an increasingly important medical and academic hub.
Nearby stands the Mohammed VI International University Hospital Complex, inaugurated by King Mohammed VI on November 3, 2025.
Built by the Mohammed VI Foundation for Science and Health over an area of 280,000 square meters, the complex brings together the Mohammed VI International University Hospital of Rabat and the Mohammed VI University of Science and Health.
The hospital opened with an initial capacity of 600 beds, which can eventually be expanded to 1,000.
