The Moroccan and Mauritanian equipment ministers signed a framework agreement in Rabat on Monday, September 21, to widen the road linking El Guerguerat to the main Mauritanian cities of Nouadhibou and Nouakchott, and onward to Senegal. Beyond the agreement’s strategic significance, the Mauritanian government has taken an important diplomatic step, undercutting Algeria’s claims that Mauritania had never formally recognised the legality of the El Guerguerat crossing.
