From early evening, the imposing Mohammed VI Mosque in Abidjan gradually filled with worshippers from various parts of the city. Men, women, and young people, many dressed in traditional boubous, gathered in an atmosphere of prayer and reflection.
The mosque’s imam, Khalif Moustapha Sonta, addressed the worshippers, emphasizing the significance of Al Mawlid Annabawi as an opportunity to recall the teachings and values of the Prophet Mohammed.
The Khalif spoke about the Prophet’s birth, his exemplary conduct, his character, and his relationships with others. He also highlighted the spiritual and moral legacy he left to Muslims, urging worshippers to draw inspiration from these qualities through tolerance, solidarity, patience, respect, and the pursuit of peace.
“This night is very important for Muslims. It reminds us of Allah’s mercy upon humanity.”
For attendees, the setting enhanced the celebration’s significance. Many worshippers expressed their enthusiasm for observing Al Mawlid Annabawi at the mosque, which has come to symbolize friendship and cooperation between Côte d’Ivoire and Morocco.
“It is a great joy to celebrate the Prophet in such a beautiful mosque,” remarked Traoré Momadou, deputy mayor of Marcory.
The Mohammed VI Mosque complex spans 25,000 square meters and features a prayer hall accommodating 7,000 worshippers, a conference hall, a library, accommodation for the imam, and other facilities.
Inaugurated in March 2024, the Mohammed VI Mosque is located in the Biafra district of Treichville, a cosmopolitan area in southern Abidjan. Built in a traditional Moroccan architectural style, the mosque was a gift from Morocco to Côte d’Ivoire’s Muslim community.
During the Al Mawlid Annabawi celebrations, the night continued with Quran recitations, religious chants, and prayers. Worshippers also offered prayers for peace and stability in Côte d’Ivoire, as well as for cohesion among the country’s diverse communities.
As the night of prayers concluded, worshippers departed with a shared message: to carry the teachings and values of the Prophet Mohammed beyond the celebration and into their daily lives.
