Nader Abderrahak, Mounia Toutier and Yasmine Metki all claimed bronze after reaching the semifinals. Abderrahak lost 5-0 to Italy’s Gabriele Guidi Rontani in the under-70kg category, while Toutier was beaten 4-1 by Turkey’s Sima Caliskan in the under-65kg event. Metki also exited at the semifinal stage after a 5-0 defeat to Spain’s Laura Fuertes Fernandez in the under-51kg category.
Morocco will nevertheless compete for three gold medals. Widad Bertal reached the under-54kg final after defeating France’s Wassila Lkhadiri 5-0, while Saida Lahmidi advanced to the under-70kg final after the referee stopped her bout against Turkey’s Dilara Sak due to a lack of competitiveness. Slimane Smagouli completed the trio by beating Serbia’s Dmitry Gorbunko 5-0 in the under-65kg semifinal.
Morocco is represented at the Mediterranean Games by a delegation of 120 athletes, including 72 men and 48 women, competing across 18 sports. The Games are being held in Italy from Aug. 21 to Sept. 3.
