The Atlas Lionesses will face Nigeria in the third round of the qualifiers for the women’s football tournament at the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games.

Nigeria secured its place in the next round on Tuesday, October 13, after completing a 7-0 aggregate victory over the Comoros. The Super Falcons won the first leg 2-0 before sealing qualification with a 5-0 victory in the return leg in Ikenne, Nigeria. Uchenna Kanu and Toni Payne each scored twice in Tuesday’s match.

The Atlas Lionesses had already advanced to the third round after Congo, their originally scheduled second-round opponents, withdrew from the competition.

The two-legged tie between Morocco and Nigeria is scheduled to take place between February 23 and March 6, 2027.

The eight teams that advance from the third round will progress to the fourth round, scheduled for October 4-12, 2027. The fifth and final round will take place from November 23 to December 4. Only two African teams will qualify for the women’s football tournament at the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games.

Five African nations have previously competed in the women’s Olympic football tournament. Nigeria participated in 2000, 2004, 2008 and 2024, South Africa in 2012 and 2016, Zambia in 2020 and 2024, Cameroon in 2012 and Zimbabwe in 2016.
