Novak Djokovic produced one of his strongest performances of the season on Sunday, October 4, overcoming world No. 2 Alexander Zverev 4-6, 6-4, 6-4 to reach the China Open semifinals in Beijing.

The victory is another reminder of Djokovic’s ability to raise his level when facing the biggest challenges, particularly during a difficult 2026 campaign. The 39-year-old has played a limited schedule this season and has struggled with physical issues, while early exits at several major tournaments have prevented him from maintaining the consistency that has defined much of his career.

Now outside the world’s top 10, Djokovic arrived in Beijing with his form and fitness under scrutiny. But the six-time champion has looked increasingly comfortable at an event where he has never lost a match.

His victory over Zverev extended that remarkable record to 32-0 in Beijing, surpassing Rafael Nadal’s 31-0 start at Roland-Garros and giving Djokovic the best unbeaten record from a player’s first 32 matches at a single tournament in the Open Era.

Djokovic withstands Zverev challenge

Zverev made the better start, breaking Djokovic in the opening game before taking the first set 6-4. The German, who has enjoyed an outstanding season and won two Grand Slam titles in 2026, also made good use of his powerful first serve to put Djokovic under pressure.

The Serbian, however, gradually turned the match around. His returning improved as the contest progressed, while his ability to stay in long rallies and remain composed during the most important points began to frustrate Zverev.

Djokovic levelled the match at 4-4 before taking control of the second set, then produced another crucial break at 5-4 in the deciding set to move within reach of victory. He saved his best tennis for the closing stages, eventually converting his opportunity to seal the match after two hours and 34 minutes.

The result also ends Zverev’s run in Beijing at the quarter-final stage and denies the German an opportunity to strengthen his push for the world No. 1 ranking.

For Djokovic, meanwhile, the run continues to gather momentum. The Serbian will now face another challenge in Daniil Medvedev in the semifinals.

The Russian reached the last four after defeating Francisco Cerundolo 7-6(4), 6-3, setting up another major test for Djokovic as he looks to reach the Beijing final.
