Hundreds of civil society organisations, backed by figures from the arts, media and academia, are mobilizing against rising racism and the political exploitation of events in Sebta (Ceuta). Demonstrations are taking place across Spain from October 22 to 27 to condemn anti-migrant hate speech, allegations of violence against migrants and the growing normalization of xenophobia. With just over a month to go before the November 29 general election, the groups warn that escalating political rhetoric is turning immigration into an electoral weapon.

The foreign minister says Morocco’s position on returns is clear and calls for the bilateral partnership to be based on dialogue, mutual respect and cooperation.

The incident outside Spain’s Congress came as protests continued over the July migrant arrivals. In Ceuta, a Moroccan man was stabbed to death and a 17-year-old with severe diabetes died at a reception center in two separate cases.

A Royal Navy unit intercepted a traditional boat carrying 201 irregular migrants about 185 kilometers southwest of Dakhla on Saturday as they attempted to reach the Canary Islands, according to the General Command of the Royal Armed Forces.

Riot police intervened after protesters broke away from a 2,000-strong march, entered the beach camp and destroyed tents and belongings. Nearly 1,000 migrants had returned to El Trampolín after authorities cleared the site on August 20.

More than 1,200 migrants were evacuated on Thursday from El Trampolín beach, where they had been sleeping for nearly three weeks. Their transfer brings an end to the makeshift camp, but it does not erase the shortages of water and food, the €500 some were charged for four nights in a storage room, allegations of racial profiling or accounts of assaults.

Wafae Atid told El País she fled Morocco after her family restricted her education, travel and clothing choices. But social media profiles that resurfaced after the interview show her in Qatar, while a LinkedIn profile lists studies and work experience in Dubai and older footage presents her as a model.

The filming ban imposed by the authorities on Spanish journalists in Fnideq on Saturday follows a strict logic of reciprocity and comes in response to the earlier obstruction by the occupying authorities in Ceuta of a crew from Moroccan television channel 2M. Freedom of the press cuts both ways.

Moroccan authorities have further tightened security in Fnideq and along its Mediterranean coastline ahead of viral calls for a mass crossing into Ceuta on Aug. 15. Around 540 would-be irregular migrants have already been intercepted and removed from the area.
