Algerian influencer Hafsa Mahiou was arrested in Algiers on Friday, Aug. 21, after old footage resurfaced online showing the Dubai-based content creator identifying herself as Emirati and making remarks widely interpreted as mocking President Abdelmadjid Tebboune.
The arrest has attracted particular attention because of Mahiou’s close association with Dubai and the increasingly hostile relationship between Algeria and the United Arab Emirates.
No detailed official statement had been issued as of Saturday specifying why Mahiou was detained or what charges, if any, she faces.
The clips nevertheless spread rapidly across Algerian social media following news of her arrest. In the footage, taken from an earlier livestream, Mahiou says she is Emirati and makes remarks about Tebboune’s name that some viewers interpreted as ridicule.
Who is Hafsa Mahiou?
Mahiou is an Algerian content creator based in Dubai who has built a large audience through digital content, voice-over work, event hosting and social media production.
She has more than 20 million followers across social media platforms, making her one of the most followed Algerian personalities online.
Her profile rose further after she won the Podcast & Storytelling category at the 2025 Digital Creator Awards, an event recognizing Arab digital creators.
Her professional career has also become closely associated with the UAE. Mahiou has worked for years within Dubai’s large influencer and digital-media ecosystem, and her professional profile lists experience in content creation, voice-over work and social media management in the Emirates.
Ordinarily, that background would have little bearing on an influencer controversy. In Algeria’s current political climate, however, the UAE connection gives the case an additional dimension.
Algeria-UAE tensions form the backdrop
Relations between Algiers and Abu Dhabi have deteriorated sharply, with Algerian authorities accusing the UAE of interfering in regional affairs and acting against Algeria’s interests.
The dispute has increasingly moved into the public arena, with Algerian state and pro-government media directing unusually strong criticism at Abu Dhabi and portraying Emirati policies as hostile to Algeria.
Algerian authorities have also warned against what they describe as attempts to destabilize the country.
The deterioration in relations became more concrete in February 2026, when Algeria began the process of terminating its bilateral air services agreement with the UAE, which had been in place since 2013.
Against that backdrop, Mahiou’s public identification with the Emirates carries greater political sensitivity than it might have previously.
