Diesel heads above DH16 as fuel prices climb again at midnight

Afriquia is among the first distributors to announce the new diesel price increase expected Wednesday evening.

A day after Fatima Ezzahra El Mansouri was appointed head of government, Moroccan motorists are bracing for another rise in fuel prices. Le360 has learned that several fuel distributors have requested an increase of 80 centimes per liter for diesel and 39 centimes for petrol, effective from around 11:50 p.m. on Wednesday, September 30.

Moroccan motorists are facing another increase in fuel prices, with several distributors requesting a new adjustment from around 11:50 p.m. on Wednesday, September 30, according to information obtained by Le360.

The requested increase amounts to 80 centimes per liter for diesel and 39 centimes for gasoline. Based on the latest prices recorded in Casablanca, diesel would rise from around 15.30-15.33 dirhams to 16.10-16.13 dirhams per liter, while gasoline would reach approximately 15.58-15.59 dirhams, compared with 15.19-15.20 dirhams currently. Prices may vary slightly depending on the distributor, station and region.

The latest adjustment extends a series of closely spaced increases that began in mid-July. Diesel prices rose by 69 centimes at the time, followed by a one-dirham increase in early August, a 65-centime rise in mid-August, a six-centime increase on September 1 and a further 34-centime rise on September 16. If Wednesday night’s increase goes ahead, the cumulative rise will reach around 3.54 dirhams per liter since mid-July.

For gasoline, prices rose by 39 centimes in mid-July and one dirham in early August, before falling by 30 centimes in mid-August and rising again by 27 centimes on September 16. The cumulative increase would therefore reach around 1.75 dirhams per liter.

Diesel widens price gap with gasoline

The latest increase also reinforces a pattern that has become increasingly familiar on the Moroccan market, with diesel remaining more expensive than gasoline and the gap between the two products continuing to widen.

Under the new prices expected tonight, diesel would cost around 16.10 dirhams per liter compared with approximately 15.58 dirhams for gasoline, leaving a difference of about 52 centimes per liter.

The latest adjustment affects diesel more heavily, with an 80-centime increase compared with 39 centimes for gasoline, further widening the gap between the two fuels.

Beyond the size of the increase, the timing of the adjustment is also notable. As with previous revisions, distributors are preparing to change their prices at almost the same time, with the new rates expected to take effect around midnight.

Le360 has repeatedly reported on the near-simultaneous price adjustments by fuel distributors, with only limited differences between their rates. The practice has also been examined by the Competition Council, which recently called on operators to change the way these adjustments are made.

In a note published in April 2026, the council said that distributors aligning their price revisions on the same dates and applying increases or decreases of similar magnitude could limit the flexibility of pricing decisions and result in relatively uniform changes across operators.

The council subsequently opened discussions with distributors to explore ways of changing this practice, particularly so that pricing decisions would take greater account of each distributor’s specific circumstances, such as supply conditions, stock levels and commercial policy.

Several months after the Competition Council raised these observations, however, the practices identified on the market appear to have changed little so far. The council’s recommendations therefore have yet to produce a significant change in how distributors adjust their prices, with operators continuing to apply broadly similar pricing schedules.
