Morocco’s ambassador to the United States, Youssef Amrani, praised the national team’s victory over Canada as “a great source of pride” for the Kingdom, saying the result carries symbolic significance that extends far beyond football.

Speaking a day after the Atlas Lions defeated Canada on U.S. soil, Amrani said the victory, achieved as the United States celebrated its Independence Day on July 4, underscored football’s unique ability to bring people and nations together during the 2026 FIFA World Cup in North America.

In a statement released by the Embassy of Morocco in Washington, the ambassador said the triumph was especially meaningful because it came in the United States on the country’s national holiday, a coincidence he described as particularly significant in the context of the tournament.

Amrani also said he was pleased to witness the occasion alongside FIFA President Gianni Infantino. He said football continues to demonstrate its power to bridge countries, continents, and peoples by creating opportunities for dialogue and connection beyond the competition itself.

For the ambassador, the victory is not only a moment of national pride but also one for the entire African continent, whose colors the Atlas Lions continue to represent with distinction on the world stage.

He said Morocco’s World Cup campaign highlights Africa’s talent, excellence, and growing international influence, reaffirming the broader continental significance of the team’s achievement.
