Twenty-eight people were killed and 2,806 others injured in road accidents across the country’s urban areas between August 17 and 23, according to the General Directorate of National Security (DGSN).
Of those injured, 121 were in serious condition. The casualties resulted from 2,066 accidents recorded over the seven-day period.
Driver inattention was the leading cause cited by the DGSN, followed by failure to yield, pedestrian inattention, loss of control and speeding.
Other causes included improper turns, failure to maintain a safe distance, and various traffic violations.
Police stepped up traffic enforcement over the same period, recording 53,295 violations.
Authorities drew up 8,398 reports that were referred to the public prosecutor’s office, while another 44,897 offenses resulted in fines.
The fines collected amounted to MAD 9.74 million.
Enforcement operations also led to 5,531 vehicles being impounded, 8,398 documents being seized and 636 vehicles being immobilized.
