Thirty-one people were killed and 2,876 others injured, including 131 seriously, in 2,073 road accidents in urban areas between August 10 and 16, according to the General Directorate of National Security (DGSN).
The main causes were driver inattention, failure to give way, pedestrian inattention, speeding, loss of vehicle control, unauthorized changes of direction, failure to keep a safe distance, changing direction without using a turn signal, driving in the left lane, failure to stop at stop signs, running red lights, drunk driving, improper overtaking and driving against the direction of traffic, the DGSN said.
Security services also recorded 53,027 traffic violations during the week. They issued 7,977 reports that were referred to the public prosecutor’s office and collected 45,050 settlement fines.
The fines totaled 9,888,250 dirhams. Authorities also impounded 5,510 vehicles at municipal facilities, seized 7,977 documents and took 633 vehicles off the road.
