Mehdia beach has recently been hit by a worrying phenomenon, with the sea advancing and coastal erosion intensifying, a Le360 team observed on site.
The situation has forced the commune of Mehdia to act quickly by reinforcing the long shoreline with tons of sand transported from surrounding areas.
Abderrahim Bourass, president of the communal council, said the erosion and gradual disappearance of sand are caused by several factors, particularly rising water levels and marine currents. The Atlantic Ocean, he added, is also drawing away sand under the effects of climate change.
"We are aware of this problem and are trying to contain it in order to preserve our beautiful beach," he said, before outlining a project the commune plans to carry out soon.
The project, he explained, involves reducing the width of the 500-meter corniche by a few meters to give waves more room to dissipate. “In this way, we will increase the beach’s sand cover,” he added.
Another source at the site said the situation in Mehdia was not linked to any illegal sand extraction in the area. The source warned, however, that changes to the coastline could create risks for swimmers, including the sudden appearance of deep areas and dangerous rip currents.
Between rising waters, receding sand, and increased risks for beachgoers, Mehdia highlights the growing vulnerability of Morocco’s coastline to coastal erosion. The commune is now trying to contain the advancing sea through urgent measures before the phenomenon further threatens the balance of one of the region’s most popular beaches.
