Morocco’s Government Council on Thursday approved a draft decree paving the way for a new generation of biometric passports designed to strengthen document security while reflecting the Kingdom’s national identity.
The measure, Draft Decree No. 2.26.551, amends the 2008 decree that established Morocco’s biometric passport system. It was presented by Interior Minister Abdelouafi Laftit during the council’s weekly meeting.
Government spokesperson Mustapha Baitas said the new passport is part of Morocco’s efforts to enhance the security of its travel documents through the adoption of a next-generation biometric passport.
“The new biometric passport guarantees security and reflects Moroccan identity in its multiple influences,” Baitas said during a news briefing following the meeting.
He said the draft decree establishes the legal framework for implementing the new passport, while existing biometric passports will remain valid until they are replaced by the new model.
Baitas added that a joint ministerial order by the Interior Ministry and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs will set out the procedures and conditions for obtaining the new passport.
The government has not yet announced when the redesigned biometric passport will begin to be issued.
