Reigning La Liga champions FC Barcelona are considering playing a pre-season friendly in Morocco before kicking off the 2026-27 campaign, according to Spanish sports daily Sport.
The Catalan club is currently preparing for the new season under head coach Hansi Flick. After a training camp in England, Barcelona will travel to Udine, Italy, for a pre-season tournament before hosting Egyptian giants Al Ahly in the traditional Joan Gamper Trophy on August 19.
According to Sport, Barcelona are exploring the possibility of adding a friendly in Morocco to their schedule before the Spanish league gets underway. The report says the initiative forms part of the club’s strategy to strengthen its presence among its large fan base in North Africa.
Neither the date of the proposed match nor the identity of Barcelona’s potential opponent has been disclosed.
The club last played in Morocco in July 2012, when Lionel Messi and his teammates defeated Raja Casablanca 8-0 in a friendly at the Grand Stade de Tanger.
Barcelona’s opening fixture of the new La Liga season is scheduled for August 23 against Elche. However, the club has been granted a special exemption by the Spanish league because of the large number of players who featured at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, meaning it will begin its domestic campaign in the second round of fixtures after its opening match was postponed.
Eight members of Spain’s 2026 World Cup-winning squad play for Barcelona: Lamine Yamal, Pedri, Gavi, Pau Cubarsí, Dani Olmo, Ferran Torres, Eric García and Joan García.
