Moroccan clubs will have an additional day after the start of the 2026-2027 Botola Pro Inwi season to complete their final transfer operations.

The LNFP has increased the financial reward for the champions to 10 million dirhams and introduced incentives linked to the integration of young players.

The opening matchday will be spread across three days, with the 16 Botola Pro clubs set to begin the new season following confirmation of the format.

A heated meeting between professional club presidents and the LNFP on Monday, August 17, over the proposed expansion of the Botola to 20 teams ended without consensus. Seventeen clubs voted in favor of the expansion, while seven opposed it and three abstained. According to multiple sources, the lack of unanimity could prevent the reform from moving to the next stage and being submitted to the FRMF Executive Committee.

As the LNFP prepares to meet this Monday to discuss a possible expansion of the Botola Pro, the question goes beyond the sporting merits of such a reform. The rules governing Moroccan football precisely define the respective powers of the League, the FRMF Executive Committee and its General Assembly. And expanding the league from 16 to 20 clubs cannot be done with the stroke of a pen.

As Moroccan football dreams of greater heights on the road to 2030, the idea of expanding the Botola to 20 clubs is gaining ground. Club presidents, coaches and now the UMFP are backing an expanded league. But before adding four teams, perhaps the first question should be whether the real problem with our domestic league lies in the number of clubs it contains.

After several club presidents and coaches, the Moroccan Union of Professional Footballers has joined those calling for a 20-club Botola. Its statement comes on the eve of a meeting between the National Professional Football League and the presidents of first- and second-division clubs, where the question of expanding the league is expected to take center stage.
