Meta announced on Monday, July 13, a significant expansion of its Hyperion data center project in Richland Parish, Louisiana. The company is increasing the site’s planned computing capacity from over 2 gigawatts to 5 gigawatts, bringing its total investment to more than $50 billion.
Initially unveiled as a 2-gigawatt project, this facility is now set to become Meta’s largest data center. Hyperion is designed to support the training of large language models, the underlying technology for generative AI tools.
This latest expansion reflects Meta’s ongoing commitment, alongside other major technology companies, to invest billions in artificial intelligence infrastructure to meet the surging demand for computing power. The company has pledged to invest $600 billion in infrastructure and jobs across the United States over the next three years.
In a blog post, Meta stated that construction on the Louisiana project, which began in December 2024, has already generated substantial economic activity in the region. Local businesses have secured over $1.6 billion in contracts linked to the development.
“With this expansion, we will be investing over $1 billion in local infrastructure improvements, including roads, water and wastewater systems, ” Meta said.
The company also highlighted the project’s impact on local public finances, noting that teachers in Richland Parish recently received annual bonuses of up to $50,000. Meta attributed these payments, which represented a 400% increase from the previous year, to additional tax revenues generated by the data center.
Meta further clarified that it covers the full costs of the energy, water, and related infrastructure used by the facility, " so consumers aren’t paying the cost."
Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry welcomed the announcement, highlighting the project’s expected economic benefits for the state. In a post on X, he said the expansion of Meta’s investment to more than $50 billion would bring " more jobs, better infrastructure, stronger communities and a more prosperous Louisiana."
Meta currently has 32 data centers worldwide either in operation or under construction, including 28 in the United States, as major technology companies continue to expand the infrastructure needed to develop artificial intelligence systems
