SpaceX on Wednesday, August 5, successfully launched three new BlueBird satellites for U.S.-based AST SpaceMobile, marking another step toward building a satellite network capable of connecting directly to ordinary smartphones in areas where traditional mobile coverage is unavailable.
The mission lifted off aboard a Falcon 9 rocket from Cape Canaveral Space Force Station in Florida, carrying BlueBird satellites 11, 12 and 13 into low Earth orbit. Following launch, AST SpaceMobile confirmed that the satellites were successfully deployed and established initial contact with ground controllers.
Unlike conventional satellite communications, the BlueBird satellites are designed to connect directly with standard 4G and 5G smartphones without requiring users to purchase specialized satellite phones or additional hardware. The system is intended to complement existing terrestrial mobile networks by extending connectivity to remote and underserved areas where cellular towers are unavailable.
The three satellites are the latest additions to AST SpaceMobile’s planned low Earth orbit constellation, which aims to provide voice, text messaging and broadband data services through partnerships with mobile network operators around the world. According to the company, the network is designed to work with existing mobile devices using licensed cellular spectrum rather than dedicated satellite frequencies.

Each of the newly launched satellites features a communications array measuring approximately 2,400 square feet when fully deployed, making them significantly larger than earlier demonstration spacecraft. AST SpaceMobile says the upgraded design is intended to increase network capacity and support faster data transmission as the constellation expands.
The company is developing the network in collaboration with nearly 60 mobile operators serving more than three billion subscribers worldwide. Rather than replacing conventional cellular infrastructure, the satellite system is designed to fill coverage gaps in rural, mountainous and maritime areas where building ground-based networks can be difficult or uneconomical.
The latest launch follows earlier BlueBird missions as AST SpaceMobile continues deploying the satellites needed to support commercial service. The company has said additional launches will be required before the constellation reaches the scale needed for broader coverage.
Several companies are investing in technologies that allow ordinary smartphones to communicate with satellites, a capability expected to improve emergency communications and expand mobile coverage in regions with limited terrestrial network infrastructure.
