Morocco’s National Foundation of Museums (FNM) and the Tokyo National Museum signed a memorandum of understanding Thursday, June 25, 2026, to expand cooperation in exhibitions, research, conservation, and the promotion of cultural heritage.
The agreement was signed during a ceremony held at the residence of Japan’s ambassador to Morocco in Rabat. Lakhlifa Dahmani, secretary-general of the FNM, and Fujiwara Makoto, executive director of the Tokyo National Museum, signed the memorandum in the presence of Japanese Ambassador Nakata Masahiro.
The partnership marks a milestone for both institutions. It is the Tokyo National Museum’s 29th international memorandum of understanding and its first with an African museum institution, underscoring Morocco’s growing role as a leading cultural partner for Japan on the African continent.
Speaking at the ceremony, Japanese Ambassador Nakata Masahiro welcomed the agreement, saying it will pave the way for joint exhibitions, exchanges of expertise and best practices in conservation, restoration and the enhancement of museum collections. The memorandum also provides for research projects, professional training and cultural programs aimed at strengthening ties between Moroccan and Japanese audiences.
The partnership forms part of broader efforts to promote intercultural dialogue and the exchange of knowledge. It is designed to showcase the tangible and intangible heritage of both countries while encouraging collaboration among their scientific, museum and cultural communities.
Founded in 1872, the Tokyo National Museum is one of Japan’s most prestigious cultural institutions. With more than 150 years of history, it houses nearly 120,000 cultural objects, including the country’s largest collection of National Treasures within a single institution.
Its holdings, regarded as the most extensive and significant in Japan, include about 3,000 works on permanent display. Internationally recognized for its expertise in preventive conservation, restoration, research and museum education, the Tokyo National Museum plays a leading role in preserving and promoting Japan’s cultural heritage.
