Christopher Nolan’s “The Odyssey,” shot with IMAX cameras and a box office success since its theatrical release on July 15, was filmed across several countries, including Morocco, Italy, Greece, Scotland, Iceland, Malta and studio sets in Los Angeles, United States.
In a country-by-country breakdown, Movie Locations identified the filming locations for each scene. In Morocco, the beach where the Trojan Horse, buried in the sand, is offered to Poseidon before being taken by the Trojans is identified as Essaouira Beach.
The city of Troy, where the Trojans bring the horse, is portrayed by the Ksar Aït Ben Haddou near Ouarzazate. According to Movie Locations, in addition to the fortified village’s existing ramparts, “no fewer than 60 additional structures were temporarily built for the film, including Athena’s columned temple and the city gates, covering a total area of one hectare (10,200 square meters).”

The website also notes that “cinematographer Hoyte van Hoytema equipped the set with rows of portable LED lights, complementing the (carefully controlled) flames used for the city’s spectacular destruction.”
Odysseus’ journey in Morocco continues in the town of Tahnaout, in the Haouz province. The town, located near Marrakech, “also served as the setting for parts of the city,” according to the website.
Further south, in Dakhla, the hero of Homer’s epic arrives as, consumed by guilt, his memories begin to fade after Calypso (Charlize Theron) offers him lotus flowers on the island of Ogygia. The pristine beach of Ogygia is portrayed by Dakhla’s White Dune, a crescent-shaped stretch of white sand located about 30 kilometers from the Moroccan city.
