The Chile-Morocco Parliamentary Friendship Group on Tuesday reaffirmed its support for UN Security Council Resolution 2797 on the Moroccan Sahara during a visit to Rabat, while also calling for closer economic and political cooperation between the two countries.
Following talks with Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita, the group’s chair, María Catalina del Real Mijovilovich, said Resolution 2797, adopted last October, enshrines Morocco’s autonomy plan as “a lasting and serious solution” to the dispute over the Moroccan Sahara.
Del Real Mihovilovic pointed out that the friendship group, which includes several parties from across the Chilean political spectrum, fully supports this resolution.
Del Real Mijovilovich also underlined that Morocco represents to Chile a gateway to Africa, expressing hope that Chile could, for its part, serve as a platform for access to Latin America and the Pacific region.
She highlighted opportunities for greater economic cooperation, particularly in agriculture, where differing growing seasons could facilitate agricultural trade between the two countries.
She also pointed to the importance of Moroccan fertilizers for agriculture in Chile, while noting that Chile could supply strategic minerals such as copper and lithium, which are increasingly important for Morocco’s growing automotive industry.
The Chilean delegation also expressed interest in expanding cooperation with Morocco in areas including desalination, technology, tourism, and academic and cultural exchanges.
Del Real Mijovilovich noted that the visit coincides with the 65th anniversary of friendly relations between Morocco and Chile and 22 years since King Mohammed VI visited Chile, adding that her country’s relationship with Morocco “goes beyond political affiliations.”
