The Polisario is threatening to cut ties with the UN Secretary-General’s Personal Envoy, accusing him of siding with Morocco. Staffan de Mistura is open to criticism on many counts. Partiality is not one of them. But the real significance of the statement lies elsewhere. It is the latest sign of the mounting anxiety that has gripped the Polisario and its backers in Algiers in recent weeks. With another Security Council resolution approaching, it is now the other side that has reason to be afraid.

The foreign minister says Morocco’s position on returns is clear and calls for the bilateral partnership to be based on dialogue, mutual respect and cooperation.

Cheikh Niang said the two countries share strong and lasting relations, while Nasser Bourita stressed continued coordination on bilateral, regional and African issues.

Colombia reaffirmed on Monday its recognition of the sovereignty of the Kingdom of Morocco over its entire territory, including the Sahara, and announced the freezing of its recognition of the so-called “sadr”.

Bulgaria considers that “genuine autonomy under Moroccan sovereignty could be a viable solution” to the Moroccan Sahara issue.
