Morocco has officially announced its candidacy for a non-permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council for the 2028-2029 term, Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation and Moroccans Abroad Nasser Bourita announced Tuesday in New York.
Speaking on behalf of Morocco during the general debate of the 81st session of the UN General Assembly, Bourita said that the candidacy reflects the kingdom’s determination to contribute effectively and responsibly to maintaining international peace and security.
He stressed that the candidacy is based on a vision of international cooperation driven by realism and solidarity that fully respects international law, the principles of national sovereignty, and the territorial integrity of states.
Leading the Moroccan delegation to the 81st session of the UN General Assembly, Bourita said the candidacy draws on Morocco’s diplomatic achievements over the centuries and is based on King Mohammed VI’s vision.
This vision consolidates Morocco’s position as a key, reliable actor promoting stability and advancing sustainable development worldwide.
Bourita added that the candidacy would enable Morocco to continue its mission of addressing peace-related issues, strengthening the foundations of collective security, and firmly defending multilateral action in full harmony with the purposes and principles set forth in the UN Charter.
Bourita said that Morocco’s candidacy is the culmination of the Kingdom’s tangible and sustained contributions to strengthening the three pillars on which the international system rests, with the maintenance of international peace and security, sustainable development and the rule of law at their core.
