The US Mission to Morocco has announced the appointment of Christopher Deutsch as the new US consul general in Casablanca, where he will serve under Ambassador Duke Buchan III.
A career diplomat, Deutsch arrives in Morocco after serving at the US State Department in Washington, where he oversaw Middle East regional affairs and strategic engagement.
His diplomatic career has also taken him to Yemen, Iraq, Egypt, Italy and Haiti, giving him extensive experience across the Middle East, Europe and the Caribbean.
Deutsch studied history at Yale University and holds a master’s degree in public policy from Princeton University. He speaks Arabic, French, Italian, Spanish and Haitian Creole.
“Our partnership with Morocco represents one of America’s oldest and most enduring alliances,” Deutsch said.
His priorities in Casablanca will follow the broader diplomatic agenda set by Ambassador Buchan, with an emphasis on strengthening relationships with local partners, expanding trade and investment, and deepening cooperation in education and culture.
Deutsch will oversee the Consulate General’s operations and work to translate the US Embassy’s priorities in Rabat into engagement on the ground.
The economic dimension of the position is particularly important in Casablanca, Morocco’s largest city and its main business and financial center. The US Consulate General serves as a key point of engagement with companies, institutions and local stakeholders in a city that sits at the heart of the Kingdom’s commercial activity.
