A man carrying a bag containing electoral documents was picked up from inside a Tangier polling station on Wednesday, prompting prosecutors to order an immediate investigation as pictures of the incident made the rounds on social media.
The man was caught inside a school being used as a polling station while Moroccans were casting their ballots in the legislative elections.
What exactly he was doing with the documents remains unclear.
The King’s Prosecutor at the Tangier Court of First Instance stepped in after reports and images of the detention began circulating online, ordering investigators to get to the bottom of the matter.
The suspect has been placed in police custody while the circumstances surrounding the incident are pieced together.
Prosecutors have so far given no details about the documents found in the bag, nor have they said whether the man is suspected of trying to interfere with the voting process.
The inquiry is proceeding under the supervision of the public prosecution, with any legal action to follow once the circumstances of the incident have been established.
