More than 4.6 tons of chira packed into 118 bales were seized from a utility vehicle outside El Jadida late Tuesday, while drones and sniffer dogs were brought in to track down a suspect who tried to flee the scene.

The haul weighed 4 tons and 631 kilograms and was believed to have been prepared for shipment through an international drug trafficking network.

The operation was carried out by the National Judicial Police Brigade (BNPJ) on intelligence provided by the General Directorate for Territorial Surveillance (DGST), in coordination with the Royal Gendarmerie.

Officers intercepted the vehicle in a rural area on the outskirts of El Jadida and found the 118 bales inside.

One suspect made a run for it as the operation unfolded.

Drones were sent up to search the surrounding area while canine units joined the hunt on the ground. The suspect was subsequently tracked down and arrested.

He has been placed in police custody as prosecutors oversee an investigation into the case.

Investigators are now looking for other people suspected of involvement and seeking to trace the network behind the shipment, including possible links outside Morocco.
