Work has begun on a 130-million-dirham project to rehabilitate the main road in Drarga, in Agadir Ida Outanane prefecture, and improve its connection to the Agadir-Marrakech highway.
The launch was led by Souss-Massa Wali Saïd Amzazi, in the presence of local officials and elected representatives.
The road runs through the center of Drarga, connecting Tlat Izem to Aït Fassi via Tagadirt over a distance of around six kilometers. The project has an estimated cost of 130 million dirhams and is scheduled to take approximately 18 months.
Al Omrane Souss-Massa is overseeing the work. Its CEO, Hicham El Faleh, said the project would be completed to high standards and meet residents’ expectations.
The works include rehabilitating sidewalks and green spaces, along with other improvements intended to make the area more comfortable for residents and visitors.
Drarga is an important industrial hub. The commune was selected to host the industrial acceleration plan signed before King Mohammed VI in Agadir on January 28, 2018.
Mohamed El Ouanzari, Drarga’s second deputy mayor, described the project as “historic.” Residents had been waiting for it for years and could no longer tolerate the existing conditions, he said. The main road’s poor condition has caused numerous problems and accidents.
El Ouanzari praised the efforts of all those involved in bringing the project to fruition. He said the upgrade would significantly enhance the area’s appeal as the commune continues to experience strong annual population growth.
Speaking to Le360, El Ouanzari said the new road would ease traffic and transport difficulties in the area. It is expected to improve travel between Agadir and Drarga, open up access to several neighborhoods and increase land values, bringing economic and social benefits to the commune.
He also stressed the road’s strategic importance, as it connects Drarga to National Road No. 11, which in turn provides access to the Agadir-Marrakech highway.
Rachid Belbouz, a Drarga resident, also welcomed the project, noting the wali’s personal involvement in monitoring its progress.
Residents are now waiting for the next phase, covering the stretch between Tigmi Nboubker and Aït Baha. The extension would be another step toward improving access to the area and providing a lasting solution to transport and mobility problems across the commune.
