The Faculty of Medicine, Pharmacy and Dentistry in Laayoune confirmed that it will begin offering the program, marking a new academic milestone for the institution and the wider Laayoune-Sakia El Hamra region. Military medicine training had previously been offered exclusively at the Faculty of Medicine in Rabat.
Fatima Zahra Alaoui El Hafidi, dean of the Laayoune faculty, told Le360 by phone that the institution’s inclusion in the program represents a significant achievement.
She said the development was the result of efforts by the Laayoune-Sakia El Hamra Regional Council, which supported and advocated for the project as part of broader efforts to strengthen the region’s higher education and healthcare offering and expand access to specialized academic programs previously limited to a small number of institutions.
The move is particularly significant as the Faculty of Medicine and Pharmacy in Laayoune is one of the flagship projects developed under the New Development Model for Morocco’s southern provinces, launched by King Mohammed VI in 2015. The initiative aims to promote comprehensive development in the southern provinces through investment in higher education, healthcare, and human capital.
The faculty’s selection also reflects the institution’s progress in infrastructure, academic supervision, and the quality of its training, reinforcing its position as a leading university in the southern provinces capable of hosting nationally significant and strategic academic programs.
The expansion is expected to broaden access to military medicine training and attract more students to the Faculty of Medicine and Pharmacy in Laayoune, in line with the region’s ongoing development momentum and its growing role as a higher education and healthcare hub in Morocco’s southern provinces.
