Morocco’s National Agency for Water and Forests (ANEF) has issued its Forest Fire Risk Bulletin covering the period from July 6 to 12, warning of extreme wildfire risk in 12 provinces.
The forecast is based on scientific models that analyse forest characteristics, vegetation flammability and topographical and climatic conditions.
According to the agency, extreme fire risk has been identified in the provinces of Berkane, Nador, Taourirt, Guercif, Ifrane, Taounate, Taza, Khénifra, Al Haouz, Essaouira, Agadir-Ida Ou Tanane and Taroudant.
A high fire risk has been forecast for Chefchaouen, Fahs-Anjra, Larache, Ouezzane, Tangier-Assilah, Tetouan, M’Diq-Fnideq, Jerada, Oujda-Angad, Fez, Kenitra, Rabat, Salé, Skhirat-Témara, Azilal, Béni Mellal, Chichaoua and Midelt.
A moderate risk applies to Al Hoceima, Driouch, Meknes, El Hajeb, Boulemane, Sefrou, Sidi Kacem and Khémisset.
ANEF urged residents living near forests, holidaymakers, visitors and forestry professionals to remain vigilant and take all necessary precautions to prevent wildfires.
The agency also called on the public to immediately notify local authorities if they spot smoke or suspicious behaviour that could lead to a forest fire.
