The Pearl of the South continues its transformation. As part of its ongoing development and infrastructure modernization, the city of Dakhla is strengthening its road safety system through the installation of smart speed cameras and surveillance cameras along several strategic roads.
The Municipality of Dakhla, in partnership with several key stakeholders, notably the General Directorate of National Security (DGSN), the Wilaya of the Dakhla-Oued Eddahab region, and the Ministry of the Interior, has launched the installation of next-generation smart speed cameras and surveillance cameras along the city’s main roads.
The new infrastructure is based on a connected system that enables continuous traffic monitoring and more effective support for the intervention of the competent authorities. The installed equipment is also expected to contribute to better traffic management and help reduce risky behavior on public roads.

“Today, as part of these major projects, the city of Dakhla is equipping itself with surveillance cameras that help strengthen security, public safety, and stability across the city. They also enable security personnel to carry out their work under better conditions,” said Erragheb Hormatallah, President of the Dakhla Municipal Council.
Al Oualaa Boulevard is among the main roads covered by the new system. Linking the city’s entrance to its center, the boulevard carries heavy daily traffic and has witnessed several road accidents in the past.
“The cameras installed along Al Oualaa Boulevard will help make this road safer, as it had been the site of several traffic accidents. Today, this equipment will allow both residents and tourists arriving in Dakhla to travel in a safer environment,” said Houssaine Azhar, a resident of Dakhla.

Beyond surveillance, the system also aims to strengthen compliance with the Highway Code. Drivers who violate traffic regulations will now be monitored more closely through these new technological tools, allowing for more effective enforcement.
“Those who fail to comply with the Highway Code or commit traffic violations will now be monitored. This will help improve traffic management and promote greater discipline among road users,” he added.
On the ground, some residents already believe the new equipment is encouraging changes in motorists’ behavior. The presence of cameras and speed radars on major roads is also helping reinforce visitors’ sense of safety.

“Foreign visitors coming to Dakhla feel a greater sense of security when they see the surveillance cameras, speed radars, and other equipment installed along the roads. Al Oualaa Boulevard used to face a serious road accident problem, but since this system was put in place, traffic has become more orderly,” said Sadam Bouchâab, a local resident.
The initiative is part of a broader series of projects accompanying Dakhla’s urban development. Over the past several years, the city has experienced sustained growth marked by infrastructure development, the upgrading of public spaces, and improvements to public services.
Through the gradual integration of new technologies into urban management, Dakhla continues to adapt to emerging challenges related to mobility, safety, and the attractiveness of a city that has become a major economic and tourism hub.
