This momentum marks a more operational phase in the region’s development. After years devoted to identifying opportunities, the focus has now shifted to actively supporting investment projects, with the aim of maximizing their impact on employment and local development.
According to Amin Fatmi, president of the CGEM-Oriental, this transformation stems from the royal vision set out in the March 18, 2003 speech, which represented a turning point for the region. That speech paved the way for a series of major infrastructure projects in road, air and port transport. Within this framework, Nador West Med has emerged as the flagship project due to its ability to foster an integrated industrial ecosystem and attract large-scale foreign investment.
The first signs of this growing appeal are already visible. A Chinese company specializing in wind turbine blade manufacturing has established operations in the region, creating more than 2,000 jobs, with production geared toward exports. At the same time, an industrial project focused on tire manufacturing is under development and is expected to generate more than 1,500 additional jobs. These developments point to the gradual emergence of a structured industrial hub.
For economic stakeholders, these investments mark the beginning of a profound transformation in the Oriental region. Long viewed primarily as a border area, it is now poised to become a genuine industrial hub, with expected spillover effects on employment, services and all activities linked to the new logistics platform.
Against this backdrop, the private sector remains cautiously optimistic. Business leaders believe that these major projects will help permanently open up the region and elevate it into a competitive territory capable of attracting both domestic and international capital. Nador West Med is thus steadily expanding beyond its regional roots to acquire an international dimension.
As the port nears completion, expectations continue to build. The project took center stage at the fifth edition of the “Nador Durable” event, held under the theme “Nador West Med Port in Service of Foreign Trade.”
According to Mohamed Bahri, director of the event, the choice of theme reflects the port’s growing strategic importance in Morocco’s development trajectory. Designed as a world-class logistics and economic hub, Nador West Med is expected to strengthen the region’s appeal and boost external trade.

The event brought together a broad range of public- and private-sector stakeholders, as well as experts and investors, at a regional exhibition dedicated to investment and sustainable development, underscoring the growing interest in the region.
Beyond its immediate economic impact, Nador West Med is part of a long-term vision. Conceived to anticipate changes in maritime trade, energy and global supply chains, it stands as one of Morocco’s most important strategic projects.
