Construction of the new provincial hospital in Mezraoua, in Taounate province, has reached around 40% completion. The project represents a total investment of 515 million dirhams and is designed to accommodate 120 beds.

The hospital is being built on an area of 11.37 hectares, with a total floor area of 31,092 square meters. The project is being carried out under a partnership between the Ministry of Health and Social Protection and the Fès-Meknès Regional Council.

Progress was reviewed during a field visit on Wednesday by Taounate Governor Abdelkrim El Ghannami and Abdelkrim Daoudi, director general of the Fès-Meknès Territorial Health Group. The visit followed a meeting on the state of healthcare in the province and ways to expand access to medical services for local residents.

Discussions covered the current state of the health sector, the challenges it faces and possible measures to improve access to care across the province. The review forms part of ongoing efforts to improve healthcare services in line with King Mohammed VI’s directives on upgrading the national health system.

During the meeting, Daoudi said the relevant services had begun assessing healthcare needs in Taounate to identify urgent priorities and determine which interventions should be scheduled in the short and medium term.

The assessment aims to improve the sector’s operations, raise the quality of healthcare and bring medical facilities closer to residents. Daoudi said preparations to bring the new hospital in Mezraoua into service were among the options being considered to address local healthcare needs.

He also stressed the importance of planning ahead for the hospital’s operation, including providing medical equipment and recruiting the necessary staff, particularly specialist doctors.

For his part, El Ghannami called on all stakeholders to step up their efforts to improve access to healthcare and meet residents’ needs.

He emphasized the need to strengthen staffing, improve working conditions and upgrade healthcare facilities across the province. He also stressed the importance of ensuring that these facilities have the necessary equipment and medicines, while placing public service and the fulfillment of national responsibilities at the heart of their work.

Following the meeting, the two officials visited the hospital construction site, where they held a working session with project managers before touring the facility. They received briefings on the different stages of construction and the progress made so far.

Once operational, the hospital is expected to expand healthcare capacity across Taounate province, improve the quality of medical services and ease pressure on other hospitals in the region.

It is also intended to improve patient care pathways, provide appropriate treatment for medical emergencies at the provincial level and help improve health indicators in Taounate and the wider Fès-Meknès region.
