Moroccan coach Tarik Sektioui began his official tenure with Oman with a 1-1 draw against Iraq on Wednesday, September 23, in the opening round of Group A at the 2026 Gulf Cup.
Iraq took the lead in the sixth minute through Mohamed Qassem, whose goal was confirmed by VAR. Oman responded with several attempts to get back into the game before eventually finding the equalizer in the second half.
Sektioui’s side levelled in the 67th minute through Nasser Al-Rawahi, who finished off a fine individual effort.
The result saw Oman and Iraq share the points after the opening round of Group A, which also includes Saudi Arabia and Kuwait.
Sektioui, the former coach of Morocco’s A’ national team, had previously overseen two friendly matches with Oman in June. His side lost 3-0 to Indonesia before beating Mozambique 4-1.
