FIFA’s ranking, now updated in real time by world football’s governing body, has brought good news for the Atlas Lions. Morocco have gained one place to move into seventh in the world, the best ranking in the national team’s history.
The rise is partly due to the Netherlands’ slip after a 1-0 home defeat to Algeria on Thursday, June 4, in Rotterdam. The Fennecs won through an 85th-minute goal by Anis Hadj Moussa, a result that pushed the Dutch down to eighth place.
The Atlas Lions remain firmly at the top of the African rankings, ahead of Senegal in 14th, Nigeria in 26th, Algeria in 28th, and Egypt in 29th.
Before beginning their 2026 World Cup campaign, Mohamed Ouahbi’s players will play one final warm-up match against Erling Haaland’s Norway. The match is scheduled for June 7 at Sports Illustrated Stadium, also known as Red Bull Arena, in Harrison, New Jersey.
Drawn in Group C, Yassine Bounou and his teammates will open their tournament against Brazil on June 13 at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey. They will then face Scotland on June 19 in Boston before closing the group stage against Haiti on June 24 in Atlanta.
