Taylor Fritz claimed the Mubadala DC Open title on Monday, August 3, after defeating Spain’s Rafael Jodar 7-6(2), 6-4 in a rain-delayed final, securing his 11th ATP Tour title and his first trophy above ATP 250 level in nearly four years.
The championship match, originally scheduled for Sunday, was postponed due to rain. After a closely contested opening set where neither player dropped serve, Fritz elevated his game in the tie-break, employing aggressive returns to force errors from the 19-year-old Spaniard.
The third seed carried that momentum into the second set, breaking early to establish a 3-0 lead. Jodar, however, refused to yield and earned a break point as Fritz served for the match. The American held firm before converting his fifth championship point after one hour and 49 minutes.
This title ended a series of near misses for Fritz, who had finished runner-up in Dallas, Halle, and Stuttgart earlier this season. It also marked his first title above ATP 250 level since 2022. Prior to his Washington victory, Fritz’s 10 career titles consisted of nine ATP 250 crowns and one ATP Masters 1000 title, won at Indian Wells in 2022 when he defeated Rafael Nadal in the final.
Speaking during the trophy ceremony, Fritz thanked his team for ending his wait for another title.
“Thank you guys for everything. I have given this speech a lot recently but not as a winner, so it is nice to actually mean it a little bit more this time. Thank you so much for everything you do, staying on top of me all the time. I know it is not easy.”
The 28-year-old was playing his first tournament since reaching the Wimbledon quarterfinals. He defeated Zizou Bergs and Kamil Majchrzak before saving a match point against Alex Michelsen in the quarterfinals. Fritz then overcame Brandon Nakashima in three sets to secure his place in the final.
Fritz also praised Jodar after the match, recognizing the Spaniard’s achievement in reaching the biggest final of his career.
“It was a really tough final, and you are having an amazing season. At 19, in your first season on Tour, what you and your dad are doing is just incredible. You are so young and are only going to get so much better.”
Despite the defeat, Jodar concluded another impressive week in Washington. His run to the final propelled the 19-year-old Spaniard nine places to a career-high world No. 15.
