Women’s AFCON: Morocco miss out on bronze after penalty shootout defeat to Algeria

Morocco’s women’s national team finished fourth at the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations Morocco 2026 after losing to Algeria 3-2 on penalties following a 1-1 draw after extra time in the third-place playoff at Rabat’s Olympic Stadium on Saturday.

Kawtar Azraf put the Atlas Lionesses ahead in the 37th minute before Lina Boussaha equalized for Algeria in the 83rd.

Nehila Benzina missed an opportunity to win the match for Morocco in stoppage time after seeing her penalty saved in the sixth minute of added time.

Algeria subsequently won the shootout 3-2 to claim the bronze medal, while the Atlas Lionesses finished fourth in the tournament.

The Women’s AFCON 2026 final between Malawi and Cameroon will be played on Sunday at Moulay El Hassan Stadium in Rabat.
