A nine-year-old boy narrowly escaped drowning while swimming in a prohibited area of Lake Como in northern Italy, thanks to the quick actions of a 45-year-old Moroccan man who jumped into the water to save him.
According to the Italian daily La Provincia di Como in its August 6 edition, the incident occurred last Thursday at around 1 p.m. near the Tempio Voltiano waterfront promenade.
The newspaper reported that the child could have drowned had it not been for the Moroccan passerby, who did not hesitate to dive into the lake and bring the boy safely back to shore.
While the child was reunited with his mother unharmed, the rescuer was not as fortunate.
He sustained an ankle injury during the rescue and was taken to Sant’Anna Hospital, where he received medical treatment.
The rescue comes just days after a tragedy at the same location, where a young girl drowned.
