Casablanca’s MAD 15 billion waste recovery project enters implementation phase

Model of Casablanca’s future waste landfill and recovery center, a 15 billion-dirham project expected to become operational by mid-2030.

Casablanca is taking a major step toward modernizing its waste management system. The signing this week of the delegated management contract marks the effective launch of the future Casablanca Solid Waste Treatment and Valorization Center, a strategic project set to bring lasting changes to the city’s environmental model, according to a statement from the Casablanca City Council.

As waste management becomes one of the major challenges facing large cities, Casablanca intends to turn it into a driver of transformation. With an investment of more than 15 billion dirhams, the project is among the largest ever undertaken in Morocco in this field.

Beyond its scale, the future center represents a paradigm shift. The aim is to move away from conventional landfilling toward an approach based on recovering value from waste, which will increasingly be treated as a resource. The approach is part of broader efforts toward the energy transition, the promotion of the circular economy and environmental protection.

The facility will be capable of processing nearly 1.5 million tons of waste a year. It will incorporate systems for producing renewable energy through waste recovery, alongside a photovoltaic solar park. The project also aims to significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions and the environmental nuisances associated with landfilling, while substantially increasing the rate of waste recovery.

Led by the Casablanca City Council, the project is part of the priorities set out in the 2023-2028 Communal Action Plan, with the aim of preparing the city for future environmental challenges. Since the beginning of the current term, local authorities have focused on major investments designed to meet immediate needs while anticipating the challenges ahead.

Now backed by a contractual, land and operational framework, the project is entering its implementation phase. It will serve the entire Casablanca area, as well as municipalities within the provinces of Médiouna and Nouaceur, strengthening territorial coordination in waste management.
