Morocco’s apple harvest is expected to touch nearly one million tons this year, with improved rainfall giving growers in Midelt a welcome boost after the 2025-2026 agricultural season.

The crop, spread across some 50,000 hectares nationwide, has benefited from substantial rains that helped replenish natural resources and improve production, Agriculture Ministry Secretary-General Redouane Arrach said on Thursday.

Speaking at the opening of the sixth National Apple Fair in Midelt, Arrach said the province remained a major contributor to the country’s apple output, with the fruit providing an important source of income for small farmers in mountainous areas.

For these growers, getting apples off the trees is only part of the job. Storing the harvest and securing better returns have long required support, particularly for farmers operating on a small scale.

Arrach said government assistance had helped producers organize themselves into cooperatives and establish cold-storage facilities, allowing them to improve their earnings.

He hoped the better weather would hold in the coming seasons, raising yields and providing more jobs and income for families dependent on apple farming.

More than 80 cooperatives have brought their produce to this year’s fair, displaying fresh apples and processed products alongside cultural activities showcasing the heritage of Midelt and other growing regions.

Held under the high patronage of King Mohammed VI, the sixth National Apple Fair (SAPOM 2026) runs until October 11, with a focus on the contribution of apple farming to the development of mountainous areas.
