The African Maritime Forces Summit (AMFS 2026) opened in Rabat on Tuesday, July 21, with senior military officials emphasizing the importance of stronger regional cooperation to address growing maritime security challenges.

The summit is organized by the Royal Moroccan Navy in partnership with the U.S. Naval Forces Europe-Africa (NAVAF) and the U.S. Marine Forces Europe and Africa (MARFORAF).

Speaking at the opening ceremony, Rear Admiral Mohamed Tahin, Inspector of the Royal Moroccan Navy, said that under the leadership of King Mohammed VI, Morocco has consistently promoted an integrated approach that combines defense, development, and international cooperation.

He added that the King has repeatedly highlighted the strategic importance of Africa’s Atlantic maritime space as a driver of prosperity and a platform for solidarity among African nations.

Admiral George Wikoff, Commander of U.S. Naval Forces Europe-Africa, said the summit reflects the shared commitment of participating countries to strengthening regional maritime security. He noted that threats in the maritime domain have regional and global consequences, making cooperation essential to addressing challenges affecting international maritime security.

Wikoff added that the participation of military and civilian officials demonstrates a collective commitment to improving maritime stability. He also stressed the need to build a stronger defense ecosystem based on partnership and innovation, describing the summit as an important forum for identifying ways to enhance maritime security capabilities.

Major General Daniel L. Shipley, Commander of U.S. Marine Forces Europe and Africa, said the summit highlights ongoing efforts to strengthen security, prosperity, and partnerships across the African continent.

He pointed to persistent challenges such as trafficking, illegal fishing, and violent extremism, describing them as transnational threats that require a coordinated international response.

Our goal through this summit is to strengthen partnerships, improve regional cooperation, and support efforts that promote security, peace, and prosperity,” Shipley said.

He added that deeper partnerships, stronger capabilities, and practical solutions would help reinforce the foundations of global security and contribute to a safer future for Africa.
