Over 91 days, Christopher Nolan traveled around the world to recount the remarkable journey of the King of Ithaca, with the film’s main locations spanning Italy, Scotland, Iceland, Greece, and Morocco.
The large-scale production required more than 600,000 meters of IMAX film and a budget of $250 million. According to the figures cited, the scale of the production reflects the ambition of the project, which features a star-studded cast.
Beyond its cast, one of the film’s most impressive aspects, Vogue notes, is that it was shot almost entirely on location. For the director, it was “a true nightmare to make... in the most positive sense of the term,” while for audiences, the publication says, it offers a visual experience that is likely to inspire many viewers to travel.

According to Vogue, the film’s shooting locations are particularly striking. In Greece, represented by the Peloponnese, the production featured “Voidokilia Beach and its remarkable horseshoe-shaped cove, Methoni Castle, built by the Venetians in the 13th century, the monolithic Acrocorinth overlooking Corinth, the unspoiled Almyrolaka Beach, and Nestor’s Cave.”
The same applies to Italy, where production moved to Sicily in March 2025 to film on the island of Favignana.
Morocco is also expected to appeal to audiences and encourage future visits because, as Vogue writes, “with its rolling sand dunes and earthen buildings, Morocco gives The Odyssey an authentically ancient atmosphere."

In Morocco, filming took place in Marrakech, Tahannaout in Al Haouz Province, Essaouira, Dakhla, and the UNESCO World Heritage-listed ksar of Aït Ben Haddou, which served as the setting for Troy. The American magazine also recalls that “this collection of earthen buildings, surrounded by high walls, has been a popular filming location since the 1960s thanks to its historic architecture.” It cites The Mummy, Gladiator, Lawrence of Arabia, and the television series Game of Thrones among the productions that used the ksar as a principal filming location.
