Turnout in Morocco’s legislative elections stood at 4.23pc by 10am on Wednesday, two hours after polling stations opened across the country.
More than 15.8 million registered voters have until 7pm to elect the 395 members of the House of Representatives, bringing down the curtain on a campaign that ended at midnight on Tuesday.
Polling began at 8am and was proceeding normally at voting stations across the country, the Interior Ministry said. Representatives of candidate lists contesting local and regional constituencies were present at polling stations.
The first turnout figure leaves another nine hours for voters to cast their ballots.
The electoral rolls contain 15,801,162 voters following an extraordinary revision completed on July 10. Men account for 54% of those registered and women 46%.
A total of 1,850 candidate lists are in the fray across local and regional constituencies, fielding 7,288 candidates for the 395 seats up for grabs. That works out at more than 18 candidates for every seat in the House.
Polling closes at 7pm.
