The House of Representatives has announced the leaders of its parliamentary groups and parliamentary grouping for the new legislative term. House Speaker Ahmed Touizi announced the appointments on Wednesday, October 14, during a plenary session devoted to setting up the lower house’s bodies, after receiving the official lists submitted to his office.

Hicham Sabiri will lead the Authenticity and Modernity Party (PAM) group, which has 97 MPs. Yassine Oukacha will head the National Rally of Independents (RNI) group, with 66 members. The RNI has opted to join the opposition in accordance with Article 5 of the House’s rules of procedure.

Madiha Khayir will chair the Istiqlal group, which has 65 MPs, while Driss El Azami El Idrissi will lead the Justice and Development Party (PJD) group, with 54 MPs. The PJD has also chosen to sit in the opposition.

The Popular Movement group, which has 29 MPs, will be led by Rime Chabat. The party has likewise opted for the opposition. Abderrahim Chahid will head the Socialist Union of Popular Forces (USFP) group, which has 26 MPs, while Chaoui Belassal will lead the Constitutional Democratic and Social group, with 25 MPs. Rachid Hamouni will chair the Party of Progress and Socialism (PPS) group, which has 22 MPs.

Nabila Jalal will lead the Left Alliance parliamentary grouping, which has nine members and has also chosen to sit in the opposition.

Three women are among the nine parliamentary group and grouping leaders appointed for the new term: Madiha Khayir, Rime Chabat and Nabila Jalal. Touizi noted their appointments and linked the presence of women in these leadership positions to Morocco’s efforts to promote gender parity.

Under Article 42 of the House’s rules of procedure, the lists of parliamentary groups and the parliamentary grouping, the names of their leaders and those of unaffiliated MPs will be published in the Parliament’s Official Bulletin.
