Ahmed Touizi of the Authenticity and Modernity Party (PAM) was elected Speaker of the House of Representatives on Tuesday after defeating the Justice and Development Party’s (PJD) Driss Azami El Idrissi by 220 votes to 59.

Touizi, a member of the PAM’s political bureau, was elected to head the lower house for the 12th legislature.

The proceedings were chaired by the oldest member of the House, 84-year-old Istiqlal MP Abdelaziz Abba.

The vote followed Monday’s announcement of a four-party coalition led by designated Head of Government Fatima Ezzahra El Mansouri, who is preparing to name her cabinet.

The coalition brings together the PAM, Istiqlal, the Socialist Union of Popular Forces (USFP) and the Party of Progress and Socialism (PPS).
