Interior Minister Abdelouafi Laftit has instructed that the country’s legislative elections on Sept. 23 be conducted in a transparent, fair and lawful manner, according to an authorized source.
Laftit issued the directives during a meeting Tuesday with leaders of political parties represented in Parliament.
Held at the Interior Ministry headquarters in Rabat, the meeting was part of ongoing consultations ahead of the 2026 legislative elections. It brought together representatives of the governing coalition, including the National Rally of Independents (RNI), represented by Mohamed Chouki and Rachid Talbi Alami, the Istiqlal Party, led by Nizar Baraka, and the Authenticity and Modernity Party (PAM), represented by Fatima-Zahra El Mansouri and Mehdi Bensaid.
Opposition parties were also represented, including Driss Lachgar, first secretary of the Socialist Union of Popular Forces (USFP); Nabil Benabdellah, secretary-general of the Party of Progress and Socialism (PPS); and Mohamed Ouzzine, secretary-general of the Popular Movement (MP). The Justice and Development Party (PJD) was represented by Abdellah Bouanou, Driss Azami Idrissi and Jamaâ Mouatassim.
During the meeting, Laftit assured party leaders that the elections would take place “under conditions that guarantee transparency and fairness between political parties and their candidates,” the same source said.
He also urged political parties to strictly comply with the legal framework governing the elections, stressing that all participants in the electoral process must fully respect the applicable laws.
The minister further reaffirmed the authorities’ determination to ensure full compliance with those rules, the source added. His message to political parties was clear: the electoral contest must be conducted within the legal framework, with the same standards applying equally to all parties and candidates.
The meeting comes just months before the legislative vote, as political parties prepare for the election campaign and authorities seek to ensure a calm electoral environment governed by existing laws.
Through these instructions, the Interior Ministry aims to establish the framework for the 2026 legislative elections well ahead of the vote, emphasizing transparency, fairness and strict respect for the law. Political parties are now expected to adhere to those principles as Morocco prepares for a new electoral cycle.
