The Ministry of Health and Social Protection is urging parents to check their children’s vaccination records and make sure they have received all recommended doses, as several vaccine-preventable diseases have resurfaced in Morocco. The ministry says vaccines included in the national immunization program are available free of charge at health facilities across the country.

Diphtheria and measles are among the diseases that were once largely brought under control but are now circulating again in Morocco. In a statement issued Wednesday, the ministry called on families to verify their children’s vaccination status and complete any missing doses where necessary.

The ministry said vaccines included in the National Immunization Program are available in sufficient quantities. They are distributed to regional depots and health centers according to local needs to ensure that families can access them.

Parents who find that their children have missed one or more doses can visit their nearest health center to complete the vaccination schedule. Vaccines covered by the national program are administered free of charge.

Renewed circulation of vaccine-preventable diseases

The reminder comes as several vaccine-preventable diseases have returned to circulation in Morocco. Measles has been the subject of particular concern since its resurgence in recent years.

More recently, cases of diphtheria were detected in the Souss-Massa region, after the disease had not been reported in Morocco for several decades.

The ministry stressed that maintaining high vaccination coverage remains essential to prevent these diseases from spreading. It said their resurgence is linked in particular to declining vaccination coverage, both in Morocco and internationally.

Families are therefore encouraged to check their children’s vaccination records and contact health facilities if any doses are missing. Completing the recommended vaccination schedule can help strengthen children’s protection and limit the spread of these diseases.
