A police officer was seriously injured in Agadir on Thursday after a motorist rammed into him, reversed over him and fled the scene during an attempted vehicle interception, police said.

The driver and two passengers were arrested shortly afterwards, while the injured officer, a member of the police motorcycle unit, was rushed to the university hospital for treatment.

According to preliminary investigations, the driver had earlier refused to stop at a police checkpoint at the northern entrance to the city and continued driving despite officers’ instructions.

A motorcycle patrol subsequently attempted to intercept the vehicle on Mohammed V Avenue.

Police said the driver deliberately struck one of the officers before reversing over him and speeding away.

The three suspects were detained following a police operation. The two passengers were also found to be intoxicated, according to the initial police account.

The suspects have been placed in police custody as part of an investigation conducted under the supervision of the public prosecutor’s office. Investigators are seeking to establish the circumstances of the incident and determine the individual responsibility of those involved.
