The Faculty of Medicine, Pharmacy and Dentistry in Laayoune hosted the second day of the second edition of the Moroccan-American Medical Days on Friday, October 30. Organized in partnership with the Laayoune-Sakia El Hamra Regional Council and the region’s Wali, the event brought together a high-level U.S. scientific delegation of professors, doctors and researchers alongside Moroccan medical professionals to examine the leading role artificial intelligence can play in improving the healthcare system.

The scientific event was opened by Laayoune-Sakia El Hamra Wali Abdelssalam Bekrate, alongside the president of the Regional Council. It featured academic lectures and practical workshops covering specialized medical fields.

The presentations focused on introducing students and professors to the latest innovations, particularly the use of intelligent algorithms to assist surgeons in performing complex procedures and improve the effectiveness of early diagnosis of serious diseases.

Academic partnership with diplomatic implications

U.S. medical delegation member Pedram Bral said the event reflects the strength of the historic ties between Rabat and Washington. He noted that the U.S. position in support of Moroccan sovereignty over the Sahara has a positive impact on prospects for academic cooperation, adding that this partnership is taking concrete shape through joint work at the Faculty of Medicine, Pharmacy and Dentistry in the capital of the Southern Provinces.

Government support for the digital transformation

Both the faculty’s dean Fatima Zahra Alaoui and U.S. Professor Konstantin Zakashansky welcomed the Kingdom’s strategic decision to establish a ministerial department dedicated to artificial intelligence as part of the new government.

They said this direction reinforces Morocco’s leadership and promotes wider access to advanced medical knowledge and technologies, enabling healthcare professionals to develop innovative and sustainable scientific solutions to medical challenges and improve patient care.

The bilateral cooperation aims to improve the quality of higher medical education in Laayoune through direct exchanges of expertise with U.S. hospital institutions. This will help address healthcare challenges on the ground and harness the digital revolution for the benefit of humanity as a whole.
