Lando Norris claimed victory at the Hungarian Grand Prix on Sunday, converting pole position into a commanding win to secure McLaren’s first victory of the 2026 Formula 1 season and the first for the reigning world champion.
After a campaign largely dominated by Mercedes, it was once again a Mercedes-powered car that took the chequered flag, this time with Norris behind the wheel of the McLaren at the Hungaroring.
Norris finished ahead of Red Bull’s Max Verstappen, who took second place, while championship leader Kimi Antonelli completed the podium for Mercedes in third.
Ferrari showed promising race pace but had to settle for fourth and fifth, with Charles Leclerc finishing ahead of teammate Lewis Hamilton.
Hamilton received a five-second penalty for speeding in the pit lane, extending his frustrating run to three consecutive Grands Prix with penalties.
The Briton heads into the summer break 50 points behind Antonelli in the championship battle.
Red Bull’s Isack Hadjar finished sixth for the second race in succession, followed by Mercedes’ George Russell in seventh and Racing Bulls driver Liam Lawson in eighth.
Audi’s Nico Hülkenberg claimed ninth to score his first points for the team this season, while Racing Bulls rookie Arvid Lindblad completed the top 10.
Formula 1 now enters its three-week summer break with Antonelli leading the drivers’ standings on 219 points, ahead of Hamilton on 169 and Russell on 160.
The championship resumes with the Dutch Grand Prix at Zandvoort from August 21-23, marking the 12th round of the 2026 season.
